One of the delights of looking back is remembering both Cleo Lane and the Beatles at the Auckland Town Hall. The Roger Fox Big Band. The band at Pinesong. Those bands in sweaty Auckland pubs. Those “clubs” of downstairs darkness and deafness inducing sounds. Those big shiny vinyl records and that old record player. The songs your Father loved. The music your Mother played. How those retro notes never completely vacate your head.
Those memories are enhanced by the opportunity provided by YouTube to hear and see much of the background to growing up in Auckland in the 60’s and 70s. It’s also fascinating to see the many variations of old favourites. Why have I started with an early Sinatra? Somehow like Elton John, while I admire the longevity, I prefer the sounds that made them. The Sinatra “straight out of Hoboken”; the son of Italian immigrants; alleged to have dodgy connections with smooth tones and amazing phrasing in this 1945 version of Somone to Watch Over Me.
The incomparable Nina Simone
Who would have thought it – Willie Nelson and it’s so cool!
Sarah Vaughan 1957…
The inimitable Ella Fitzgerald…
A very differentLinda Ronstadt
And behind it all, the magic and poetry of George and Ira Gershwin…. retro notes.
