Tauranga Art Gallery is showing a collection of work by New Zealand artist Ian Scott. It’s a spectrum exhibition of the development and styles of Scott’s art.
The paintings are from Scott’s early 20’s onward. There are early huge, precise landscapes and New Zealand images. Lattice works similar to intricate middle-eastern intertwined patterns. There’s one that’s in different shades of white – it’s wonderful but almost lost amongst the colour of its neighbours. Other works have hard mondrian-type blocks of colour. The influence and/or homage to Scott’s art school teacher is evident in some of the works. There’s also interesting images like the portrait of Rita Angus over a landscape background and the “Picasso on a Green Wall”.
The exhibition is part of The Wallace Collection. (Sir) James Wallace has been collecting art for years and the community has and is benefitting. Ian Scott is not a contemporary New Zealand artist, he is a New Zealand artist. Go and have a look. The exhibition is showing in Gallery One until 9th November 2014.
