BOP Symphonia’s concert GYPSY! took place at the Civic Theatre, Rotorua, and Baycourt, Tauranga on 18th and 19th April 2015 The audiences were very receptive and at both concerts responded enthusiastically to the orchestra and the two soloists – soprano Anna Hawkins and violinist Brigitte Balzat.
Anna sang four of Dvorak’s evocative Gypsy Songs and two well-known arias from Bizet’s opera Carmen, while Brigitte played two famous show pieces for violin – Monti’s Czardas and Sarasate’s Gypsy Airs. As well as accompanying the soloists, the orchestra performed Strauss’s Overture to The Gypsy Baron, Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, Bartok’s Rumanian Folk Dances, and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. The concert, conducted by Music Director Justus Rozemond, concluded with an encore specially arranged for both soloists and orchestra – Nino Rota’s Ai Ghiocci Addio.
Some enthusiastic responses were received from members of the audience:
I was recently in hospital so couldn’t attend this concert so a friend took my wife. They came back absolutely delighted with special praise for the two soloists. Oh ! To be so talented so young. It was also good to learn that Baycourt was practically booked out which must have thrilled you all.’
The concert was most enjoyable and the first and last numbers really magnificent with the variety of instrumentation etc. The theme carried through well and I particularly admired the violinist.’
Four people who I know have sent messages that they loved the concert. Special mention for Anna and Brigitte.’
Totally positive feedback from my fan club, they loved the entire programme +++.’
Great feedback from our neighbours. They enjoyed Justus’ performance too, thinking he was as much fun to watch.’
Wonderful! Best concert yet.
Much better than I had expected.’
