COMMEMORATIONS OF BATTLES OF GATE PA AND TE RANGA
29 April 2014- 21 June 2014
2014 is the 150th anniversary of battles in the local territorial and land wars fundamental to the development of present day Tauranga. 29 April 2014 was the noted battle of Pukehinahina-Gate Pa. 21 June 2014 – is the anniversary of the subsequent battle at Te Ranga. The Battles at Pukehinahina (Gate Pa) and Te Ranga remain significant events for the entire community and a number of cultural events in conjunction with the commemorations are taking place now and in the coming months.

The group which has been going for 13 years has 27 members who create a wide variety of styles of art. If you miss the exhibition you may see some of the artists showing at Art in the Park (Coronation Park). You are also welcome to visit the working sessions. WHEEL OF EXPERIENCE – ARTS ON TOUR
06 May, 7.30pm
Original songs that bring to life stories unearthed from New Zealand’s wild west! The artists were interviewed by Kim Hill on National Radio on Saturday 26th April 2014. They commented that their original works are “the breath between the lines”. Based on New Zealand’s not too distant past of European settlement and land acquisition the music ranges from beautiful, soft folk-style sounds to the impassioned and powerful “100 Trees” based on the amazing engineering development of the Raurimu Spiral – a musical marathon. The artists describe their narrative songs as “a hell of a good story” . The range of “stories” is obviously wide – the shock and privation of early settlers, the rough places and times like Raurimu and the West Auckland Gumdigger’s Camp of the charismatic Portuguese “Don Buck” . There are fiddles, 5 string banjo, banolin and wonderful voices. A special set evocative of the tent and log cabin dwellings of the period has been built. The artists say “they are travelling from Kaitaia to Stewart Island and playing in tiny little town halls to opera houses!” This will be a unique performance experience. Don’t miss it.

AND GOING ON:
CREATIVE TAURANGA GALLERY
BLEEDING VINYL COVERS EXHIBITION
Until 6 May
A group exhibition by Tauranga artists at Creative Tauranga Gallery, Willow Street Tauranga. This is one of the most interesting exhibitions I’ve seen in the Creative Tauranga Gallery. It’s different and it’s cool. By the time I got there some of the works had been sold and/or removed from the exhibition. I don’t want to single out works as “better” than others but of course as an Eggleston fan I love “Pig Floyd”; I adore the black and white James Stenbridge Led Zeplin and the Stephanie Brebner recyled record covers “Opportunity Found”. This is an excellent exhibition. While you’re in Creative Tauranga take a look at the variety of information and pamphlets on the stands opposite the main door – so much going on.
The exhibition Bleeding Vinyl Covers will be reinstalled at Lightwave Gallery 31 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui after May 06.
