Bernard Edmaier: Colours of the Earth
Phaidon Press Limited, London 2013

This book of images of the earth is presented in colour categories.  The images have the appearance of abstract paintings or compositions.   The deep orange-coloured front cover image references a McNeill abstract currently exhibited at Gallery 59.  The images are breathtaking.  Irrespective of age it’s a book that will expand your world and your horizons.    And yes, this book includes images of New Zealand.

The author’s statement says “ Bernard Edmaier (b.1957) began his career as a geologist before turning to photography more than 20 years ago.  Edmaier’s aerial photographs reveal the vast geological structues of the earth’s surface, as seen in mountain ranges, icy as well as hot desserts, volcanic landscapes and ever the shallow waters of oceans all over the world.  His abstract and beautiful compositions offer an awe-inspiring view of our planet and have achieved international acclaim.”

It’s stunning.  Do view this book.  It’s obtainable as a free non-fiction loan book from the Tauranga City Library.
