ARTbop is pleased to note in WORDS: Kupu and Word, the media release from Mauao Publishing informing us of the publication of local writer, Debbie McCauley’s most recent work. It has been an ongoing privilege to meet with Tauranga City Library-based McCauley and to read her beautifully illustrated and presented books. It is also wonderful to see the bi-lingual nature of her work.
McCauley’s latest book is The Treaty of Waitangi in Tauranga: Te Tiriti o Waitangi ki Tauranga Moana and appropriately it is being launched on Tuesday 6th February: Waitangai Day 2018. Our history is never simple and there are always disparate versions of events. Although McCauley’s book is a “picture book” written for children I believe that I and other adults will benefit from reading it.

Here’s the publicity statement from Mauao Publishing:
“Kia ora,
Mauao Publishing is excited to release details of our new offering:
The Treaty of Waitangi in Tauranga: Te Tiriti o Waitangi ki Tauranga Moana
The story of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Tauranga is a fascinating one, told for the first time in this bilingual picture book. The document arrived in Tauranga after many years of violence and bloodshed had decimated the local population. Just days before the Treaty’s arrival, a Tauranga chief was tricked into attending peace talks before being murdered and eaten. Not all the chiefs of Tauranga Moana signed the Treaty; those who didn’t wanted to govern themselves, those who did were looking for protection against their enemies. However, just two years after the signings, three Tauranga Treaty signatories were murdered and eaten in what was one of the last cannibal feasts near Tauranga.
