While Paradox Inside, the street art focused exhibition at the Tauranga Art Gallery was not everyone’s cup of tea, the exhibition was an affirmation of the stage of development and acceptance the gallery has recently achieved within the wider Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty community.
For years territorial authorities have been chastised for providing funding for creative organisations and activities within the Western Bay sub-region of the Bay of Plenty. The overwhelming success of Paradox as an event, a tourist attraction and a gallery drawcard combined with the recent formal acceptance of an arts strategy represent a creative activity tipping point and confirm the Councils’ support.
ARTbop’s Lee Switzer created a photo essay at the launch of Paradox Inside. (Inside was the gallery based exhibition there are also numerous specifically created works within the Tauranga Downtown area). I’ve also included a sprinkling of images taken during and at the closing day of the exhibition. So enjoy Switzer’s bird’s-eye view of the opening of one of the Tauranga Art Galleries most important exhibitions.
