Exhibition: Legend & Legacy by Michelle Estall October 6

You may remember the outstanding Monarch Butterfly “girl” image created by Michelle which was part of the 2017 Miles Art Awards – it was pretty and a statement at the same time.
 It will be interesting to see the development of Michelle’s work.

Half of the work on display is inspired by Maori Legend, purakau.
The other half references the influence of Michelles own journey of discovery into her Father’s family heritage, ancestors and their legacy.

Workshop: Guided Art Workshop with Nemesh October 6 – 8

 

Enjoy a relaxing art session with Nemesh that is designed to suit beginners and mid-advanced artists. Through a set of exercises, you will learn how to handle oils using different tools and techniques.

Where: The Art Lounge, 32 Devonport Road

When: October 6 – 8, 11am – 5pm daily

What to bring: All art material and tools will be provided on the day. You only need to bring 2-3 canvases with thick bars per day (EG Das) no larger than 50x50cm (40×50 or so) to fit the table easel.

Booking: There is an option to book 1-day or both. By booking both days you can expand on a knowledge and have more fun creating!

Exhibiton: I Died in Hell, Passchendaele: From Tauranga to the trenches October 6 – November 17

 

I Died in Hell tells the story of Carl Jordan and his friends. The exhibition includes excerpts from letters written by Carl and his friends Albert Wasley, William Cunningham and Cecil Guinness, and gives attendees an insight into what these men endured during the battle. The exhibition also includes film footage from WW1.

Tauranga City Council’s Heritage Collection in partnership with WW100 Tauranga have curated From Tauranga to the Trenches exhibition, which will be on display at three different locations across the city. The series has been made possible thanks to a grant from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board.

I Didn’t Stand A Chance is the title track from Kendall Elise’s debut EP released in March this year, and the follow up to Heart Full Of Dirt – one of three finalist’s in this years APRA Best Country Music Song at the Country Music Awards in June 2017.

Kendall and her drummer Chris will be travelling all over the country bringing a raw, stripped back version of her stage show to a town near you.

BDO and Tauranga Musica, in association with Chamber Music NZ  present  Wilma and Friends.
CMNZ has brought Wilma Smith, legendary kiwi violinist back to NZ for a major tour. Wilma is the former Concertmaster of the NZ Symphony Orchestra and founding member of the NZ String Quartet. She is joined on tour by Caroline Henbest on viola, Alexandra Partridge on cello and Andrew Leathwick, piano.
Caroline is principal viola with the Australian Chamber Orchestra while Alexandra and Andrew are kiwis currently studying at the National Academy of Music in Melbourne.
A special feature is a new work written especially for the tour by Andrew Leathwick.

Exhibition: Down – up by Graham Crown October 12 – 28

 

Graham Crow’s exhibition of new works titled Down Up will wow audiences at Zeus Gallery on Marsh Street from 12 to 28 October 2017. All are welcome to attend the opening event, where they can meet the artist, on Thursday 12 October at 5.30pm.

Maungatapu-based Graham Crow is a favoured name on the Tauranga art scene and is known for his bold and dynamic approach to colour, surface and light.

Following on from the successful exhibition Blue Shift, shown at Zeus Gallery in 2016, Down Up is a new collection of minimalist abstract works inspired by thumbnail drawings from a sketchbook Crow was using in 2007.

Concert: Kokomo & friends October 13

 

Blues ‘n’ roots favourites Kokomo play their first theatre show in Tauranga since the sold-out concert at the 2016 National Jazz Festival. The band are currently in the studio recording a new EP so expect new songs, including the latest single “Holed Up In Karamea” old favourites, and a healthy dose of earthy Delta blues.

Kokomo will be joined by special guests, Tauranga musical royalty, Marion Arts and Robbie Laven. Marion and Robbie will play an opening set and will later feature with the band.

There will be a full bar before the show and at intermission and Grant Bullot will be exhibiting a selection of his paintings. Ticket numbers are – obviously – limited.

Workshop: Great Photography Weekend October 14 – 15

 

Kim Westerskov’s biggest workshop of the year is coming up. Over the weekend of 14-15 October, Kim will cover most of what you need to know to become a much better photographer, including photographing people, landscapes, wildlife, travel photography, composition, lens choice, which settings to use, harnessing your creativity, and much more. 

As an internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer and teacher of 10+ years, Kim has developed workshops that are focused on simple techniques to get great results. All abilities from beginners to expert are welcome.

 ANOTHER POETRY FOCUSED EFFORT BY FORMER ARTbop alternative Editor the multi-talented Dhaivat Mehta here working with Jay Fitton to bring a slam of words to the Mount!

Jay Fitton and Dhaivat Mehta are hosting a Bay Of Plenty/ Tauranga heat on the 18th of October at the AstroLabe Brew Bar at the Mount. This is an excellent opportunity for local poets and wordsmiths to show their skills and the winner wins the opportunity to represent Bay Of Plenty at the National Poetry Slam.
The 2017 New Zealand National Poetry Slam Finals will be held on the 4th of November 2017 in Hamilton.

A Dog’s Life: Lynley Dodd and Penelope Jackson October 22

 

Hairy Maclary first stepped out of Donaldson’s Dairy 34 years ago and immediately captivated readers and listeners, young and old.  Since then Dame Lynley Dodd has written and illustrated 20 picture books featuring Hairy Maclary and his gang. 
To mark the publication of her newest book, Scarface Claw, Hold Tight! Dame Lynley talks to Penelope Jackson about the work which has brought her international renown. Expect a lovely session of conversation, storytelling and live-reading of the famous Hairy Maclary books.
